Costa Rica, drietenige luiaard / threetoed sloth

Costa Rica, video observatie van Drietenige Luiaards, De kameraman 'betrapt' een moeder met jong die in een boom klimmen nadat ze op de grond hun behoefte hebben gedaan, dat doet een luiaard gemiddeld slechts één keer per week. Luiaards vormen een onderorde van middelgrote Zuid-Amerikaanse zoogdieren waarvan tegenwoordig nog twee families bestaan: tweevingerige luiaarden (Megalonychidae) en drievingerige luiaarden (Bradypodidae). Luiaarden zijn herbivoren en eten weinig anders dan bladeren, al kunnen ze ook insecten, kleine hagedissen en kadavers eten. In vochtige omstandigheden bevat hun vacht bacteriën die voor camouflage kunnen zorgen. De vacht is meestal (diep) bruin, maar sommige in het wild levende luiaarden (zo ook het in deze video getoonde exemplaar dat in de boom klimt) hebben een groenige tint dankzij de aanwezigheid van de bacteriën. On average a sloth leaves the trees to do this just ones a week. Sloths are south-american mammals that currently are divided into two families: Twotoed Sloths (Megalonychidae) and Threetoed Sloths (Bradypodidae). Sloths are herbivores and feed mostly on leafs, although they sometimes also eat insects, small lizards and corpses. In moist living conditions their fur may contain bacteria that provide camouflage. Normally their fur has a (deep)brown colour, but thanks to the bacteria their fur may colour greenish, as is the case with te shown Sloth that climbs the tree.
